Fantasy Pick: Miss St.

Score: 31-14 Kentucky
Woodson: 350 yds, 2 TD
Little: 110, TD, 40 rec
Tamme: 50 yds
Burton: 100, TD
Lyons: 60 TD
K: FG
DEF: 14 pts allowed, 5 sacks, int, 2 fumbles

Miss St. will have 6 home and 6 away and return 9 offensive and only 5 defensive starters. The Wildcats could catch them sleeping as the Bulldogs will have played Tennessee and on road against WVU before playing, and after our game they have Alabama so it could be possible that Kentucky could face a very demoralized football team by then. If not, Miss St. still could be banged up a bit knowing they have Alabama after us and we might just catch them looking ahead and not focusing 100 percent on the game. By this time in the season Kentucky should be looking good and playing well, and we will know what they are capable of doing this year by then. I'm expecting a big game out of Woodson here.

Breakin' Down The Sched!

I admit, I'm one of those UK fans who's overly optimistic each and every season despite what the naysayers predict on paper or on the air. I like to think that Kentucky would run the table every year, but I ain't that stupid. I know deep down there are going to be wins no one expects and there are going to be losses no one could ever fathom the thought of. This year Kentucky's post presence will be fresh and while we haven't yet seen what a Patrick Patterson can do in a Kentucky uni I have to be optimistic he's going to be a replaceable threat to Randolph Morris. I have to believe that Billy Gillispie will have these Cats up and running and I have to believe that Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford will step up and provide senior leadership and results on the hardwood as any reasonable Kentucky fan should expect.

Kentucky's sched came out yesterday and well, here's my preseason take on it.

Key Losses
Dec 1 North Carolina
Dec 8 @ Indiana
Jan 22 Tenn
Mar 2 @ Tenn

Yes, I expect to be swept by Tennessee this year. I think Indiana is a game no one thinks of losing but it's possible on the road. All these losses are key games for Kentucky, and it's not to say they won't win any of these games, I'm just expecting losses.

Ok, looking at the schedule, Kentucky has one whale of a month in January, and of course it's a key month this season.

Month of the Year: January
5th L'ville, optimistically: win, realistically: loss
12th Vandy, optim: win, realist: win
15th @ Miss St., optim: win, realist: win
19th @ Florida, optim: win, realist: loss
22nd Tenn, optim: win, realist: loss
26th SC, optim: win, realist: win

Optimistically I'd like to see these kids go 6-0, but come on, for real that ain't gonna happen. Realistically the Cats could go 3-3 with losses to Louisville, Florida, and Tennessee, so somewhere in the middle of the road is where I will predict a 4-2 record in the month of January with a win vs Louisville and loss to Florida on the road and a loss to Tennessee in Rupp Arena.

Important Stretch of Games

Kentucky early on their schedule I feel has an important stretch of games which are crucial to the momentum Gillispie will be trying to build his team with. Realistically Kentucky is going to lose to North Carolina, so the following games are important, including the UNC game (to win it first of all), to rebound in case of a loss to UNC

Dec 1 UNC
Dec 8 @ Indiana
Dec 15UAB
Dec 18 @ Houston

Non-Conference

There are two tough games on the non-conference sched for the Wildcats: UNC and Indiana (excluding the Hoops Classic). The rest should be, SHOULD BE, wins. Maybe not convincing wins, but Kentucky should and are expected to pull out those wins.

Key Stretch of Conference Games

Feb 12- March 5 {7 games}
@ Vandy, optim: win, realist: loss
@ LSU, optim:win, realist: win
Georgia, optim: win, realist: win
Arkansas, optim: win, realist: win
Ole Miss, optim: win, realist: win
@ Tenn, optim: loss, realist: loss
@ SC, optim: win, realist: loss

Optimistically: 6-1, Realistically: 4-3
Vandy, Tennessee, and South Carolina could all be losses this late in the season if Kentucky isn't focused and playing well. Tennessee is practically a lock for a loss for Kentucky while Vandy and SC tend to play us hard on the road in their house, so it's somewhere between four and six wins during this stretch and I would bank on around five wins and two losses. Those two losses likely being Tennessee and Vanderbilt - both on the road for Kentucky.

In addition to what I've layed out of my expectations this season thus far, there are also unexpected disappointing losses which occur almost every season. It's just bound to happen and it's very hard to predict which is why I'm going to try to predict which games are going to be disappointing losses for Kentucky this upcoming season.

Disappointing Losses
Jan 15 @ Miss St.
Feb 6 @ Auburn
Feb 12 @ Vandy
March 5 @ SC

No big surprise these unexpected losses might occur on the road. Vandy I have slated for a loss already and accounted for already in my final predictions, but nonetheless is disappointing.

So with that said, realistically I'm looking at an 18-9 (9-7) season for Kentucky. Optimistically, I'm looking at a 22-5 (13-3) season - all excluding the Hoops Classic Tourny in the beginning of the season. So somewhere between these two records is likely where Kentucky will end up for the season I feel.

The Wildcat Blog's Hoops Expectations

Wins: Between 18-22
Losses: Between 5-9

So I feel Kentucky is destined to earn at least 18 wins and at the most 9 losses for their upcoming campaign for their eighth national title. Lastly, all of the games I have slated for losses are key games for Kentucky. Not to say they'll definitely win or lose but they're key to Kentucky's success this year. There are nine games I have down for losses (possible losses). DL=Disappointing Loss.

KEY GAMES
Dec 1 UNC
Dec 8 @ Indiana
Jan 15 @ Miss St (DL)
Jan 19 @ Florida
Jan 22 Tenn
Feb 6 @ Auburn (DL)
Feb 12 @ Vandy (DL)
March 2 @ Tenn
March 5 @ SC (DL)

It's Called Momentum

Even just a little bit can make a difference in a game, in a season.

Mark Story poses a good question here, why move the L'ville game at all? For Rich Brooks it was a personal preference.

“I just prefer to play the game in the middle of the season or at the end of the season,” Brooks said. “It's what I'm used to. I'm used to playing rivalry games later in the season.”

Although I'll buy that excuse from Rich Brooks to some extent, the better part of me says that's a B.S. statement. You see it's called momentum. It's better for Kentucky to go into the L'ville game say 2-0 after playing a couple cupcake non-conference games than it is opening the season with L'ville. And Brooks is right, by that time he can address issues on both sides of the ball that occur and watch game tape of L'ville. It's an advantage for both L'ville and Kentucky, more so for Kentucky because they're banking on a 2-0 start to the season going into Louisville AND knowing a bit of what L'ville may bring them.

Louisville on the other hand doesn't want the rivalry game delayed because, well, to them Kentucky is one of those cupcake, easy non conference wins on their schedule. See? Louisville has owned Kentucky and it looks like it's not going to change any time soon with the exception of a possible upset this season. Why would Louisville move this rivalry game down their schedule and give Kentucky an opportunity to scout them? Trust me, the Cardinals aren't worried about scouting the Wildcats which is why they like Kentucky first on their schedule, especially when the game is played in their backyard so don't expect that to change. Ever.

Me? Well I'd like to see the rivalry be the last game played because by then emotions are high, bowl season is in the air, and one of these two teams, hopefully both, will be trying to hold on or vie for a bowl game.

And that would be good TV!

So it's called momentum. Either way you look at, Kentucky is trying to build momentum up to the rivalry game with L'ville while L'ville already has it and doesn't want to let it go. There's a term for that, but we won't say what it is here.

I have one thing to ask the Louisville Cardinals Football Staff: If you're so confident in your coaching and team, then why not play this rivalry game last on the schedule like the rest of the nation does? Scared to lose something?

Corso Tries To Rip Hope Away From Kentucky Faithfuls

LINK

“Louisville is one of the best offensive teams in the country. Kentucky may score some points, but they'll have to take giant steps forward defensively to even play with those guys.”

“Rich Brooks has done a solid job rebuilding UK football off the Hal Mumme-era NCAA probation. But there is no hope -- none -- of Kentucky ever becoming an elite team in the Southeastern Conference.”

“You look at the SEC, there are too many good teams,” Corso said. “You look at the traditions at LSU and Alabama, Kentucky can't match the schools it has to compete against.”

(Ok, maybe he has a point, but maybe the proper term is unlikely here, however I give Kentucky excellent chances to make Corso #2 in his Dockers this season.)

“I'd say Louisville will be a two-touchdown favorite. Mark that down,” Corso said. “It shouldn't be a close one.”

(Two TD deficit won't be anything to overcome with Kentucky's offense this year, the question is the defense and I'd bet we improve drastically this season contrary to what Mr. EPSN COLLEGE FOOTBALL thinks.)

As The World Revolves Around Barry

It's Your Wednesday Night Parody Commentary Edition

I've been known to write a parody, or two, or three, or more, and since Mr. Barry Bonds is close to surpassing Hank Aaron's record, I thought I'd share a parody I wrote last year on him. In fact, this parody could be for every athlete out there who is or is thinking of using steroids to cheat the game he plays. I really haven't shared my parodies with anyone or on this blog, and most of them are sports related, they're just not Kentucky-related, which is why I normally don't post such things on this blog, however, since it is a very, very slow period for this blog, I decided to post the video of the actual song the following parody is making fun of. Enjoy. It's subjectively opinionated.

Sugar HGH

Inject that sugar in my butt
I'm gonna, gimme gimme some of that Human Growth Hormone
Sweet sweet, mother mother, it turns me on, want more of it

And leave me some of that miracle juice, pour it,
Right here to the tip of my mug, hold it,
Right there, cuz baby, if I like it you know I'll spike it
If you're willing to do a favor for me
With directions, two needles, and hand cream
The best thing is the way I swing
And the rest is just a league that is drug free
Normally I seek the truth cuz,
The smaller the berry, the more it's juiced cuz,
Historic records and egg yolk drinkin'
When it's the right time they the best for beatin'
Southern boys don't say more when they lie after takin' steroids
So if you rang the door, it's paid for
I believe you got a package for me that I came for!

Inject that sugar in my butt
I'm gonna, gimme gimme some of that Human Growth Hormone
Sweet sweet, mother mother, it turns me on, want more of it

Inject that sugar in my butt butt
Yippee yippee what what?
Goodie goodie gum drops, poppin' em my lunch box
Now watch me hit a home run!
Haters hate my stats stacked
I turn around and they call me scumbag
Met a woman next door with a blog on me
Said she wanted to get me in the sack jack!
It was lust at first sight
And you wouldn't believe the things that she did to me
And my size was just right!
Cuz she wanted a man with a small tiny little wee wee
So she did me around the world twice!
And I yelled her name from the Cubans to the Japanese
So I hit that all night!
So put the bubbles in the tub with H-G-H in me!

Inject that sugar in my butt
I'm gonna, gimme gimme some of that Human Growth Hormone
Sweet sweet, mother mother, it turns me on, want more of it

Sweetie my diet is so impeccable
So nutritious and undetectable
All I need is a rich lawyer
And some guy bloggin' to discount all you heard
And there's no need to celebrate
Just give me some time and I'll fake my way
Can I call you when I'm there?
Cuz then you would go woo-hoo to taste my Lucky Charms!
One box outta hit the spot
And the prize inside ain't worth alot
So by bed time don't get pissed off
You might croak in there if I show it too much, but
Honey, why you cryin' and packin' your clothes
Cuz if you keep quiet no one has to know
That the best part of this deep slugger
Is a protein shake before I break a record!

Inject that sugar in my butt
I'm gonna, gimme gimme some of that Human Growth Hormone
Sweet sweet, mother mother, it turns me on, want more of it

It's Time For A Music Pick

NUMB

It's been awhile since a music pick and today the The Wildcat Blog feels like a music pick. It's the worst month of the year for a Kentucky fan I must say, recruiting rumors are ok, but I'll let those guys who know and see do their thing, no? Here's some interesting links …

HOCKEY TALK: Off Wing talked with a couple hockey bloggers, met up with them actually. Ugh! Hockey. If it was about Kentucky I'd be interested but hockey lost me years ago. However, it does pop an idea to my head: I think the UK Blogosphere should attempt a conference meeting of their own, along with a UK Blogosphere Podcast. I've had those ideas running in my head for some time now.

From Fanhouse: Here's something I didn't know - Charlie Weiss almost died from gastric bypass… then loses a court battle over it.

Barry Bonds turns 43. If I see another headline with Bonds and some number, I'm gonna puke. I hate baseball.

Via, Deadpsin, hilarious pic of a dog about to take a bite out of Vick. Must see.

Via Wildcats Thunder, Messenger puts together an excellent piece on Kentucky's scholarhips. Must read.

A Packers couple admitted to locking their 7 yr old kid in his room while they went to a casino. Ruh Roh!

I know the David Stern Press Conference was watched by many due to the ref scandle but live blogging it? ASoB voices their take. Good read, too.

Curtis Martin retires.

There's a 2-sport star looking at Kentucky hard.

Some NFL Team Should Bounce On Couch!

As we blogged here, KSR now reports that WKYT has reported that Couch is finally going to re-start his career in the NFL. In fact, be sure to check out the video interview at WKYT. Couch talks about contacting every team in the league and the mindset of owners being reluctant at first to give him a another try after two shoulder injuries.

We here at the Wildcat Blog believe there are teams that could use his assistance. Tampa Bay, yes. Carolina, what has Delhomme done lately, yes. Um, thinking, oh Miami, CHECK YES. Um, Buffalo, yes. Um, Houston, check yes. Uh, Oakland, YES. The Raiders were the recipient of an aging Super Bowl QB in Rich Gannon. Two times the charm? Um, why not Green Bay again? Favre is about done ready to finish his career. Uh, Atlanta. From dawg pound to dawg pound. LoL. Why not, Vick, I'm sorry, isn't going to be in the league for much longer. If I was Atlanta I'd start thinking for the future. Um, what about Washington. Let Couch see if he's better than Brunell. From what I'm hearing, I'd bet he is, even if it's a backup roll to Campbell.

So there are several teams that wouldn't hurt at all to take a look at Couch. Couch's last attempt was a preseason in Green Bay, so maybe the Packers want to take another look at him. That would give the Packers some time after Favre retires to see if Aaron Rodgers is who they want. So realistically, Couch could land on a roster this year, very possible if he passes his physicals and shows some talent to potential owners. The only downside? Team worry of Couch re-injurying an already battered shoulder which might be the only thing keeping Couch away from the NFL.

It's Official: Woodson Is A Heisman Candidate

Well, maybe not so much by popular media, but Athlon Sports seems to think so.

Two others you can add to the list of possible Heisman candidates on Kentucky's offense …

· Rafael Little (Pending any unforeseen injury)
· Keenan Burton

Burton could easily be considered for the Heisman too along with Woodson if Woodson is connecting on most his passes and scores with Burton, and of course, assuming Kentucky's offense is a scoring machine and the defense can stop teams as Athlon Sports points out for us.

Why he’ll be left out: The Wildcats’ third-place finish in the SEC East last fall was more than respectable, but they’ve got to do better than that to get their quarterback a Heisman. And until their defense proves it can stop somebody, they won’t.

Final analysis: It’s a matter of getting him enough help. Woodson’s not Paul Hornung, so his team will have to win a certain minimum number of games to put him in the spotlight and keep him there. A bid for first-team All-SEC might be as good as it gets for Woodson at Kentucky.”

Woodyard = Broken Hand

Free safety Marcus McClinton will replace Wesley Woodyard for at least six weeks as he will undergo surgery this Tuesday. Woodyard got injured last Thursday during practice.

One hopes this isn't the beginning of a bad season for the Wildcats, however if something is going to happen injury wise, I'm glad it's now. The word is that Woodyard will be able to practice and play games in a cast but may be limited to playing time. Still though, losing a player for any time with Woodyard's experience and talent is a low point for the team thus far. If I comprehend correctly, shuffling the depth chart has already begun as McClinton, the free safety, will play linebacker in place of Woodyard. On the flip side, if he's able to practice and play games, the only thing that might hurt is him playing limited minutes in games they HAVE to win early on in the schedule. That means someone is going to have to step up and contribute while Woodyard is nursing his injury. The Wildcat Blog wishes Woodyard a speedy and safe recovery and a return to the starting lineup as soon as possible. Woodyard is clearly one of the leaders on defense and a rising star on a proven (vs Clemson) yet unproven (yet this year) defensive squad. We wish him back soon, and I trust Rich Brooks has guys in place ready for such a calling to step up and make plays in such circumstances. Well wishes to Woodyard.

Rating Helmets

In football, helmets are important. Duh. I wouldn't want to be caught without a helmet on with Braxton closing in on me for sure, even though he'd pop it off for me. But in my opinion, the way a team's helmet looks is just as, and maybe just a little more, important than the way the jersey is designed. Granted, both need to go together in harmony, however when you start talking about teams, the vision of their helmets are what first pops in your head, so in that respect helmets are a team's identity. I've heard women who are not into football that much say they pick teams because their helmets look good. Surprising I know. Anyways, I'm not too fond of Kentucky's all blue helmet. Too much blue, although I love blue, it's just too much blue for a helmet. I like simple helmets. Straight up, this is who we are type of helmets and color schemes. I loved the white helmets with the blue UK logo on it. That was a sweet helmet and I wish they'd bring it back because it still would look good with their uniforms.

After finding a history of UK's football helmets, I decided to rank them in order of greatness since it is a slow period of the year. We have nine (9) helmets to look at dating back to 1970's blue stripe, all white helmet (vintage, yo!). Here's how I rank them between 1 and 5 stars, 5 being the best.

5 Star Helmets

The first helmet is vintage man. I mean plain white with what looks like a triple blue/white stripe. So yeah, kinda like Penn St.'s helmet, and yeah, I'm a fan of their helmet (not their team). The second helmet is almost the same but with a better shade of blue and the 'K' on the helmet. This look adds a little old-school identity and is a classic. The third helmet might have a lighter shade of blue and has the blue face mask. Again, just classic and sweet.

4 Star

The only 4-star helmet, the only thing I don't like is the triple blue stripe, otherwise it's another great helmet of our time. Just the right amount of blue to white.

3 Stars

I love the 'K' on the helmets, but the shade of blue is almost like UNC's which makes this almost unbearable to look at. Just the wrong shade of blue.

2 Stars

The first helmet here is almost a one-star but I liked the oval idea on the helmet but I don't like the word 'Cats' nor the shade of UNC blue. Otherwise if it were to have the letter 'K' or 'UK' in the oval and the right shade of blue this might jump up to a 3 or 4 star helmet. The second helmet I can say is a two-star because of the black. Don't add black to any UK logo or helmet. Just don't do it, it takes away from Kentucky's originality. All I can say is 'uck'.

1 Star

I'm not a fan at all of the state shape with the Wildcat head. I just think it's plain ugly. What can I say, I'm a simple guy. Plus the shade of blue again. Uck. The second helmet is Kentucky's current helmet, and although I've had to live with it, it's just too much blue. It's the right shade of blue, but it's too much, especially when they wear their all blue uni's. Too. Much. Blue. Period.

So there you have it. what's your favorite?

Fantasy Pick: Florida

So what will it take to knock off the defending national champions this season? It's an uphill climb to defeat them but I really believe Kentucky can. The Wildcats seem to have a knack for playing this game close in the beginning then letting it slip away in the second half. After last year's success and holding off Clemson for the bowl win, I think Kentucky can find a way to upset the Gators and give Florida their first loss of the season. It will be a combination of things, that type of game where player positions will be shuffled around. Expect a lot of receiving out of the backfield for Little. He may not break 100 on the ground, but he'll make up for receiving. Tamme should also be a huge key to Woodson's success in this game. Between delayed blocking schemes to rolling out for the catch for the first, Jacob Tamme has to come up huge for Kentucky in this game and games like these. The Gators return 21 scholarship juniors and seniors, return six offensive starters and just two defensively, but this is Florida, they have talent waiting in the mix. This should be a close game, I mean down to the wire, and should be Kentucky's next big upset win under Rich Brooks. Let's look at my fantasy stats …

Final Score: Kentucky 23 Florida 21

Woodson: 250 yds, 2 TDs, 20 rushing
Little: 85 rushing, TD, 60 receiving, TD
Tamme: 80 yds
Burton: 75 yds
Lyons: 45 yds, TD
KICKER: 2 FGs
DEFENSE: 21 pts allowed, 5 sacks, 2 Ints, 2 fumble recoveries

Fantasy Pick: LSU

Last year LSU spanked Kentucky and buffed their behinds like mommy and daddy are supposed to. An embarrassing 49-0 score to LSU has to leave the Wildcats sour, so this season it should be a more competitive score at least. LSU returns six starters on offense and eight on defense, so they still look poised to return a very good team despite the absence of JaMarcus Russell. Let's get to my fantasy stats for this game …

Final Score: Kentucky 17 LSU 31

Woodson: 250 yds, TD, Int
Little: 130 yds, TD, 45 receiving
Tamme: 60 yds
Burton: 80 yds
Lyons: 50 yds
