Quite Frankly, I See A Resemblance

Yo, peace to Pippi Longstocking!
I see the resemblance of Pippi Longstocking, what about you? Pic courtesy of SI.com.

Every now and then, especially since Kentucky news is scarce, I like to delve into the NBA hoops and see what's going on, well, this Saturday morning I woke up to something quite amusing. No it wasn't Joakim Noah, that's late news. I woke up to a column by True Hoop on ESPN in which he refers to a quote from one of his readers,

“I finally figured it out [Joakim] Noah looks like the spawn of Diana Ross and Matlock.

Now that's funny, but I think Pippi suits him best. From that column we also find a vid on the Portland Trailblazers page of them drafting Greg Oden then ends with ticket info. I just find it funny how now days with the #1 pick, especially with LJ, teams market around it to spike up ticket sales. I'm just not sure that Oden is THAT good. If I start seeing Oden commercials like Lebron's I'm going to know hell has frozen over.

Last but not least, I've saved the best so you'll remember. Via True Hoop, via Slam Online, YOU HAVE TO SEE THESE KIDS HECKLING Stephen A Smith at the NBA Draft. It is the most outrageous, funniest, and intelligent idea since bringing keg parties to horse races. Well maybe not so, but with YouTube around, these guys have started a trend. Start expecting more stuff like this on a yearly basis. This was great for my Saturday morning wake up, better than coffee or any alternative!

I am Stephen A Smith and I can't believe how good these cheese doodles are! Funny! Stephen, Stephen, Stephen, Stephen, Stepheeeeen!

Hail! Hail! Pippi Longstocking!

Hope To Be Winnin' With DeAndre Liggins

2008. Scout's #5 four-star SF recruit from Brewster Academy who is very versatile with the ability to create plays with his passing skills yet still has another year to work on his mid-range perimeter shot. DeAndre Liggins. Just verballed to Kentucky. Scout lists him as “Maybe best served being listed as a Scottie Pippen point-forward type.” Type, not necessarily equal to, however, he's a top 5 kid, and the Wildcat Blog welcomes him to the second season of the giddyup era.

Welcome to Lexington, DeAndre

· Related: Wildcats Thunder has a a good recap of Gillispie's recruits so far in addition to Liggins.

Fantasy Pick: Florida Atlantic

Today we look at Florida Atlantic, a team in the Sun Belt Conference. They went 5-7 last season, 4-3 in the conference, and Kentucky is head coach Howard Schnellenberger's alma mater. Florida Atlantic returns 21 starters, nine offensively and 10 on the defensive side of the ball. Last year, QB's Rusty Smith and Sean Clayton combined for 2211 yds, 11 TDs and 14 Ints. They return this year. Others returning include WR Frantz Simeon and Jason Harman who both combined for just 3 TDs last year. Rushing the ball, Charles Pierre returns to improve on his 756 yds and 5 TD performance of last season. They lost two 180 yd WR's who combined for 4 TDs and a 251 yd, one TD running back in Aaron Sanchez. Florida Atlantic is ranked 109 by Scout while Kentucky is ranked at 38. We'll see if there's a reason for that when they play. Certainly both teams return practically an entire starting defense to this year's roster.

We know what Kentucky is bringing back, so lets get to my fantasy stats,

Final Score

Kentucky 31, Florida Atlantic 13

Andre Woodson: 250 yds, 2 TDs, 20 rushing
Rafael Little: 235 yds rushing, 2 TDs, 20 receiving
Jacob Tamme: 45 receiving, TD
Keenan Burton: 85 receiving, TD
Dicky Lyons: 70 yds

DEFENSE: 13 pts allowed, 2 FR, Int, 4 sacks

Of course this year, I like Kentucky to put up points and against teams like Florida Atlantic and Kent St.- teams normally not in contention for the national title - these teams are games Kentucky has to put a whooping on when they can if they are going to beat the Florida's, Tennessee's, Georgia's, Alabama's, and LSU's of the SEC, so for that reason I predict high stats and a convincing win in consideration what Kentucky did last year and who's returning on Kentucky this season, and if they can't beat the Kent St.'s and Florida Atlantic's then Kentucky doesn't deserve any kind of SEC championship talk from Rich Brooks or anyone else (such as me) coming out of our mouths. This year it's Kentucky's chance to put Lexington on the map in college football.

Olek: O-laaaaay-k!

Via Chris Diggs, this video of Olek Czyz has me impressed. Much. Not to say that he's anything close to Tyler Hansborough, but after watching the video of his highlights I was reminded of him in that thinking that Olek could very well make an immediate impact like Hansborough had in North Carolina.

Scout has him listed at 6-8 235 and of course a native of Poland, he could be Big Woo's successor at UK. Czyz needs to work on his perimeter shot and post play skills but clearly by what we've seen from this vid, he can clearly run the floor and make an impact. Maybe something exactly what Gillispie has ordered. I like the kid who is ranked #19 at his position for 2008.

A Candid Rich Brooks

“ ... because people are going to take us more seriously so we have to get a lot better than we were last year if we wanna have the same results, and we don't wanna have the same, we wanna improve. We wanna be a factor to compete for the SEC Championship and we're in a position hopefully that we can make some noise in that direction this year. ”

“ ... but walking into the Music City Bowl in Nashville and lookin at the predominately blue and white crowd, at least three quarters of it, was a very special moment, and to see how those fans responded to the way there team played hard and played with their heart on the field was a very special moment. ”

“ The Keenan Burton's, the Andre Woodson's, to home-grown Kentucky guys, you know, Rafael Little, Jacob Tamme, and other Kentucky guys, we're talkin' about not only great players but great individuals and great class. ”

In what was perhaps so far was the interview of the year by KSR, head coach Rich Brooks heads up a 15 minute candid interview in which some of things he said ruffled up my passion for this special Kentucky team this year. In a good way though, I finally saw by listening to this interview a glimpse of a coach we rarely get to hear about in this much candid and special interview. You won't be disappointed when you listen.

On Woodson's Improvement

“He's always had the ability. He grew up a great deal in maturity. Not getting down on himself when things didn't go well around him. He just made huge, huge transition in leadership and the ability to know what's going on on the field. He spent time in the film room. Coach Sander I think had a major impact on him. He's as good as anybody in the country in my opinion.”

On His Time In Lexington

“We've recruited very hard obviously. As an example, we had my first year, we had one player that could run under 4.5. This past March on Pro Timing Day we had 15, so the speed level on our team has increased dramatically. We had more players that I would say are SEC caliber and much of that has come just because we finally have all our scholarships back.”

On Defensive Coordinator Steve Brown

“Steve is much like Joker Phillips. He has paid his dues as a coach. He was a great player in college, an All-American, played for me at Oregon. He played in the NFL as a starting corner for 8 years for the Houston Oilers. Just an outstanding communicator. He's got a Super Bowl championship ring, stayed on, I hired him in St. Louis to coach the secondary. He stayed on with Dick Vermeil to coach the secondary on the Super Bowl championship team after I left there, and he's just done a great job at the college level the last four years of recruiting, communicating with the players, and I think it is a very positive influence on players that we have.”

On The Incoming Recruiting Class

“Well, probably won't be as many as the last two years (True freshmen starting). Two years ago we had 14 true freshmen play, thirteen last year. I would imagine that hopefully it won't be in double digits. It would be below ten I would think. But we do have some players I think that come in and have a chance to do some things for us. We certainly had five of them in the Kentucky - Tennessee All Start game: four lineman and one punter/kicker who obviously will challenge Mathsay for playing time. We have some skill guys coming in. We'll look hard at Matt Lentz, quarterback from South Carolina who also played in an All-star game down there. And I just think there's a lot of good prospects, and the good news is we'll be able to redshirt more of them than we have in the past and give them another year to mature and grow.”

On Recruiting In General

“Well one, we have to cover a big base and we do a lot. We recruit the state as hard as we possibly can. We would like to keep everybody in state, obviously some of them get away from us. Some of them go out of state. L'ville has had a major impact obviously in the recruiting war in state as well, but I think that most of all we've done a good job evaluating the talent level of the player we bring in that will be better athletically hopefully than the player we currently have. Each year we've been able to upgrade that a little bit as far as speed and size and it's starting to pay dividends.”

On Keenan Burton

“Keenan is as good a player on and off the field as I ever coached. He's a great leader. He's bright. The really exciting thing for me is this past Spring he was better than he's ever been since he's been here, and he came off a phenomenal year last fall. He improved this past Spring … Based on what I've seen, he's going to have a fantastic year.”

Spring Thoughts

“I think Hartline's arm might be a little stronger than Fidler's right now, but that was based on Spring practice. And as you know, there's a good three month period and I'm anxious to see them this August when we start up again throwing the football.”

On Himself

“Well I don't know that there's any magic thing than just rollin up your sleeves and goin to work everyday and not letting the negatives influence your judgement because certainly there's been enough of those flying around particularly in my first three years here, so you just have to know that you're doing the things right and just keep going about it and trying to work hard and we had a good year last year but it isn't where we wanna be, we wanna be better that that, and it's gonna be harder to accomplish even what we did last year because people are going to take us more seriously so we have to get a lot better than we were last year if we wanna have the same results, and we don't wanna have the same, we wanna improve. We wanna be a factor to compete for the SEC championship and we're in a position hopefully that we can make some noise in that direction this year, but to do it we have to beat people that Kentucky hadn't beaten in a long time so that's always to me a great challenge, a great way to motivate yourself to keep your nose to the grindstone and try to make things better.”

On Last Season

“Well I had hoped that it wouldn't take the fourth year, I had hoped it would happen in the second or third but it didn't, and we just kept going forward and now, the main thing it ranks up there, it was great fun. I'm not sure, you always have great moments and great games and great memories about places you've been whether it was the Falcons we we went to the Super Bowl and we beat the Vikings on the road up there. The Rose Bowl year, the first bowl game at Oregon in 26 years in 1989 when we went to the Independence Bowl and beat Tulsa there. Those are special memories, but walking into the Music City Bowl in Nashville and looking at the predominately blue and white crowd, at least three quarters of it, was a very special moment, and to see how those fans responded to the way there team played with their heart on the field was a very special moment. I just hope we can repeat that many times this upcoming season and the years to come.”

On 2007 Keys To Success

“I really think that last year we did a great job at home. We were 6-1 at Commonwealth Stadium. We have eight homes this year now. Some of those games are harder with great teams coming in. L'ville comin in here, LSU's comin in here, Tennessee's comin in here, it's just not going to be an easy schedule but if we can maintain our position at home and come out of there with six or seven wins then all of a sudden anythings possible with this football team in my mind. I think we have closed the gap on the upper teams in our league talent wise, and now we just have to get over the hump and stigma if you will of not having beat Tennessee a couple decades, struggling with the LSU's, and the Arkansas's, and the Alabama's, and those kind of people, the Florida's if you will. We just have to start beating some of those people.”

On Moving The L'ville Game

“I'm just a believer that a rival game, particularly an end of season game, is where most people play their rival games. You look at George-GT, two teams in different leagues, they play it at the end of the year ... I just think that you build up to that game through the season and it's a great way to finish the year … It isn't going to be any less significant because it's not the first game, and I just have a problem with people going wacko on just all of a sudden this great rivalry isn't going to be a great rivalry any more. We just have to do a better job of being competitive in that game to get our side of the rivalry back to where it belongs.”

On Beating L'ville

“Well it's always important. We obviously failed in my four years here. That doesn't sit well with me, I know it doesn't sit well with the fans. I think we have closed the gap in the talent area. L'ville's still a great team as the preseason rankings are showing, but we're a better team than we were last year when we played them. We have improved a little bit each year talent wise and now we just have to step up and try to get a win.”

Closing Interview

“We'll it's my pleasure. I just hope that everybody will come into Commonwealth and root for these Wildcats. We got a lot of great young men that came here with the thought of trying to make Kentucky Football something that everybody could be proud of, and this senior class that will be playing their last season here is a major, major part of it. The Keenan Burton's, the Andre Woodson's, to home-grown Kentucky guys, you know, Rafael Little, Jacob Tamme, and other Kentucky guys. We're talking about not only great players but great individuals and great class.”

If Brooks gets Kentucky to an SEC Championship win, he'll deserve Commonwealth Stadium named after him.

Jared Carter - F.R.U.S.T.R.A.T.I.N.G.

Going into the 07-08 season Jared Carter had been anticipated by many to finally flourish on the floor in an opportunity to showcase his skills, but with yet another injury to his already battered shoulder which required, or shall we say, Carter elected to have surgery on, the 7-2 center from Scott County, who averaged just over 5 and 6 minutes per game his freshman and sophomore year, appears to be set up to play limited time off the bench which will allow Billy Gillispie to see exactly where this kid stands with his shoulder this year. A fourth injury to his shoulder, then Carter, though wouldn't be his fault, would end up being a bust in many fans' eyes. At least mine.

The fact that Gillispie, as reported by Marc Maggard, is going after Leonard Washington hard, the 6-6 200 lbs SF who has been let out of his LOI at USC for 07, is proof enough that Gillispie isn't done recruiting for the 07 class. He reclassified from 08 to 07 and at this point a new talented post player as the 3 star player from Lake Charles, LA who is listed as a big time scorer and has strengths such as his perimeter shot and plays facing the basket is just about as good as an unproven, injury prone Jared Carter who really hasn't played enough in his first two years at Kentucky. In fact, Carter was approved for a medical redshirt year for last year making him a sophomore still for this upcoming season and saving Kentucky a scholarship which I suppose is why Kentucky is going after another post player to round out the 07 class if they can. But no matter which way I look at it, I wonder in respect to the team does Carter's nasty injury bug cause him to be recruited over since the wonder and maybe the anticipation that Carter just might injure his, dare I say, shoulder yet a 4th time. Carter at this point is still a wonder of an athlete as would some of the incoming recruiting class simply because he hasn't played much, missed almost the entire season last year, and now has to compete for playing time with an injury bug forever, no pun intended, looming over his shoulder. The reality is that Gillispie is looking for kids who can run the floor. Fast break it. And score with a physical presence. Take a look at it this way, if Carter doesn't show up in a big way this season, the first three recruits listed at Scout.com for the 08 class are five-stars: two PF and a center in Michael Dunigan. All have been offered. Carter in my eyes stands to be recruited over, especially if he has no impact this upcoming season, and I mean in a starting kind of way. The likelihood of Carter contributing for Kentucky will be minutes from the bench much like how Obrzut's career at Kentucky was, the way I see it, because of a nagging injury and the likelihood of him re-injuring it again will always be in the back of Gillispie's head.

And you can't be any more frustrated with Carter than Carter himself should be.

You can't blame the kid for practicing in the Summer. Injuries are something that's always part of the mix, you just hope it doesn't happen to you and that you condition your body well, however in Carter's case, he was trying to prove a starting roster spot in a new energized offense headed by new head coach Billy Gillispie. With Morris and Obrzut gone, the middle was left empty for Kentucky and doubt whether Carter could carry the position lingered. Now it lingers even stronger as for a starting role. How effective can he be this soon after surgery? Time will tell, but I wonder after all these injuries if Carter is still the same player or ever will be at his position when he signed on to Kentucky. Carter presumably owned that starting spot until unfortunately he re-injured his shoulder.

Now Carter is back at square one which he began this off season before his re-injury trying yet again to kick start his UK career, but by the time he's ready again, it might be too late depending on Gillispie's recruiting whether this kid earns a starting spot. He might just very well never actually kick start a UK career but finish his time contributing from the bench like Lukasz Obrzut did behind Randolph Morris while some fans wonder what would've been of a kid who by whatever reason never showed the potential he was hyped up to be in the beginning.

This is all not to say that Carter won't bounce back and make big plays for Kentucky, I hope he does. I just think it will be from a backup roll rather than a starting roll, and if you're Jared Carter or a Jared Carter fan, you just gotta be frustrated with the whole thing.

Slow Down Billy! Get Your Cut First!

Maybe surprising to some, definitely to me, that Billy giddyup Gillispie has been so focused and busy on the recruiting front that he's been operating without a contract. That's pretty surprising since this job has been touted as the best in college basketball and he and Mitch Barnhart haven't come to terms yet? I know some of it has to deal with Gillispie filling his staff if I read correctly and finalizing things. Says Barnhart,

“He has done a remarkable job in 2½ months. He's worked really, really hard to recruit, to bring some players in here that give us a different look. Billy has certainly given us the energy that we needed and that that fans desired.”

Yeah, I get the feeling too that Gillispie has already earned far more than what probably was agreed upon.

An Apology For Kent State Nation

Waking up to this …

mongoose777 said...
“Hey, I hope your 'lil wildcats think like you do regarding Kents football team. However, I do love your QB Woodson.
Three major college magazines (Lindy,Athlon,Phil Steele) are predicting your team to be around the 6-win game catagory for this year, while the same previews have Kent between 8/9 wins. Kent State is an up and coming team and will fight the wildcats till the end. I predict a much closer game since your defense appears to be near the bottom in all catagories of all D1 college rankings.
Since you mentioned that you were to cool like that or shall I say lazy like that, I'd say do your homework next time on Kent State.”

… woke me up quicker than dropping a couple caffiene tablets in a can of coke. I admit though, I was lazy like that, and since I've offended a few fans from Kent St. nation (thanks for reading my blog!), I think I owe Kent St and their fans at least the respect of seeing what others are saying about their team before I go foolishly blabbing off ridiculous predicted scores like 48-0, right?

Kentucky winning only 6 games would be a major disappointment with who they are returning on offense and with an anticipated improved defense. In fact, CSTV, a CBS company, has Kentucky at #23 in their pre-season poll, which I find humbling yet at the same time feel they are deserving either way because they will break the Top 25 this year if they play up to their potential. In fact, ESPN has Kentucky winning 8 games, winning 4 games in the toughest conference in the nation. In the blogosphere, Ryan Ferguson, also of AOL's Fanhouse fame and of Orange and Blue Hue fame, said this about Kentucky … “… and I think winning 8 games for UK this year is very doable. Your Cats might just shock some of the traditional powers.”

That's a Gator fan saying that. So while that I may have over-indulged my senses to my satisfaction and at the same time underrating Kent State, Kentucky winning six games this year would be a huge disappointment for the talent returning on this year's team. In fact, I see a couple SEC upsets in the making this year.

With that said, I've been lazy like that, and I apologize to the entire Kent State family, fans, and nation. Forty-eight to nothing was a little disrespectful. My new score? How does 24-10 sound?

Fantasy Pick: Arkansas

Not that I've done any scouting, but I've read by many people who know their college football that Arkansas is going to be very good this season.

The first road game is always tough. It's tests your ability to play in front of hostile crowds. The head games. Can you let it not affect you? If Woodson and Little or Burton want to raise their NFL stock or Heisman hype, they're going to have to have a big game at their first opportunity on the road to start turning some heads. Maybe a huge game isn't necessary since Arkansas will be much more hyped and be the favorites, but having a huge win at Arkansas could in fact raise their stock as players on the rise if they can beat down some Razorbacks to go 4-0 in September. Possible? Yeah. Likely? We'll see. A tough game? Definitely.

I like the upset special in this one. One part possibility, two parts the fan in me. If Kentucky wants to see a conference championship appearance, this game is a test they're going to have to win, and it comes early in the season, so let's take care of business!

Here are my predicted stats:

Woodson: 330, 2 TDs, 15 rushing
Little: 85 rushing, TD, 40 receiving, TD
Burton: 90 yds, TD
Lyons: 55 yds
Tamme: 65 yds
DEFENSE: 2 FR, 2 Ints

FINAL SCORE: Kentucky 27 Arkansas 10

Fantasy Pick: Louisville

Ok, I admit I slacked last week and all of you who were expecting my fantasy pick for L'ville got disappointed and went out to vandalize Papa John's Stadium. Ok, maybe that didn't happen, but I didn't forget if that's worth anything so today you get a double-dose of fantasy goodness from a guy who honestly doesn't like scouting and relies purely on my psychic abilities to call these games.

Ahh, when Louisville comes rolling around, I'm just hoping it's shown on TV since ESPN is unlikely to pick the game up. After two, shall we say lesser games in respect to the Cardinals, Kentucky get's its first true matchup of the season vs Louisville at Commonwealth Stadium. Now I could have this game like a homer would and say 30-20 or 17-7 or 14-3 all in favor of Kentucky or I could be like a homer would and call the game 24-23 Kentucky at home. I think the Wildcats deserve that much no? I just wanna see Jacob Tamme throw an elbow down the middle of the field, catch the ball, and run over some linebackers for about 25 yards. BRUISING man!

Here's my predicted stats:

Woodson: 201 yds, 2 TDs, 1 Int, 25 yds rushing
Little: 140 rushing, 35 receiving, 2 TDs
Burton: 65 receiving, TD
Lyons: 60 receiving
Tamme: 30 receiving

Final Score: Kentucky 24 L'ville 23

2010: Year Of The Silver Spoon

Via Wildcats Thunder, some kid named Dakota Euton just verballed to Kentucky for 2010.

Yeah, that kid up there. A 6-7, 200 lbs PF from Rose Hill Christian HS in Ashland, KY. I don't know much other than this kid had Florida and Duke on his list and the fact that this kid just verballed over those schools is impressive as a Kentucky fan. In fact, I know so much nothing about this kid that the only thing I do know is that he reminds me of …

Yeah, Silver Spoon's Rick Schroder. I have such a warped mind, but I can't help these things. Wait, I apologize for this benighted outburst of a post. I'm not a judge of character, well maybe sometimes, but what I am is a judge of pictures, and what I see is what you get my friends.

I'm sure Dakota Euton is a well mannered young man, and the Wildcat Blog welcomes him to Kentucky. Additionally, we here at the Wildcat Blog hope Dakota Euton a well-measured and filled to the rim success during his time at Kentucky despite my ignorant ramblings of what his appearance reminds me of. I'm sure he's a good kid and 2010 will be a good year to look forward to now that this kid verballed because I trust what Billy G is doing until he proves me wrong.

Before Feeding Donovan Waffles, Maybe Tubby Deserved Some Too; Andy Katz IS An Opinionated Columnist

Via Kentucky Sports Radio, our former coach Tubby Smith was on an Atlanta radio show recently talking about his time with Kentucky. It's your normal interview, you know the normal sucking up answers you always here until he was asked whether he was ever offered any NBA jobs during his ten years at Kentucky …

Well, I have had turned down literally six jobs in the NBA over my ten years at Kentucky, and uh, that were … I just felt like college basketball is where I belong. I enjoyed it. Certainly I have had talks with Atlanta a couple times.” - Tubby Smith

Whoa! Six jobs? You were offered six times in ten years? That leaves four years he was left alone. Sixty percent of his seasons spent he was subpoenaed by the NBA and it never leaked out? Dang, that Tubby Smith knows how keep things on the down low, you know yo? He flirted with Atlanta twice and the Lexington Herald Leader didn't know? Amazing.

But that's not what's really amazing though. Check this out, Tubby Smith admittedly and actually took two jobs to unspecified NBA teams before waffling back to Kentucky and kept it on the down low between he and anyone else that knew of his Billy D waffling.

Oh yes. Oh yeah, there was about three of them, I thought, hey this is it. Much like Billy Donovan, you emotionally attached to a job but you go in there, in fact, I did what Billy did. I took one job, actually took two jobs and then decided hey.”

That would be hey, I'm a college coach. Thanks but no thanks but thanks but really no thanks. Wait. Yeah, no thanks. Not one time but twice. Without the public even knowing. Yo, that's keeping things on the down low for real. No wonder Tubby sucked at recruiting on a consistent basis, 60% of his time at Kentucky he was entertaining offers from the NBA. It all makes sense now, and when people caught on, that's probably why he left for Minnesota because the expectations aren't as high and entertaining offers from the NBA probably wouldn't be news there for anyone to report, but at Kentucky of course it would be. I'm just saying that's how I see it going down now. It's obvious that if Tubby's telling the truth that being offered six times in his ten years at Kentucky that there are some teams in the NBA that really want Tubby. Maybe he couldn't handle the heat to decide because he was coaching Kentucky but at Minnesota it wouldn't be too bad to handle. Just saying. It makes sense to me. Maybe it's not going to be too long before we see Tubby Smith leaving Minnesota for the NBA. You heard it here first!

Andy Katz Brown Nosed Big Blue Nation But To No Effect

I don't know what's worse: sucking up to Kentucky fans because you were caught slacking on your Top 10 college teams, or being in denial that you're an opinionated columnist. Anywho, Andy Katz, the ESPN columnist who's had a knack for misspelling lately, made it on the Sports Mob last week and I have to give Andy the two thumbs up for showing up though after, what, cancelling like two dozen times right? That Andy Katz has to have some man parts to show up on the show after world record dissing the Sports Mob, but actually Katz didn't make a very good case for himself. It ended up after all said and done, he basically was sniffing the behinds of the Sports Mob and Kentucky fans because well, I got the impression that ego and the way people think of Andy Katz really matters to Andy Katz. I mean talk about another waffler, wait till you hear how he'd go back and put Kentucky back in the Top 5 college teams after seeing Kentucky's practice facility. What you say? Serious yo. The practice facility should automatically put Kentucky #1. LoL. I'm just reporting what Andy Katz was reporting. LoL. But wait, check this out when he says he's not an opinionated columnist. Funny stuff man,

(23:00 mark)… I'm not an opinion columnist. I mean that's the thing. I mean I understand that the slant may look like we were critical of Kentucky with the UMass situation, but it was UMass that ignited the whole thing by being upset, by the AD sorta saying some inflammatory comments. Um, you know, Billy Gillispie when I talked to him, he did not wanna … he wanted to pass it off to Mitch, which is fine. So he did not want to make it a big issue, so Kentucky did not want to get into sorta a tit for tat deal with this which I totally respect and understand.

On Donovan, you know, Jay wrote an opinionated piece and was a very strong voice on it and was critical and I thought it was really good strong piece. My charge and my job there was to get him on the phone, Billy that is, and for him to explain himself, and that's all that I was suppose to do, and I was not you know because we had Jay's strong opinion piece there wasn't going to be another one from me, so I mean we sorta bouncing out with a strong opinion piece, and then Donovan's, you know, not excuses, but his reasoning, his reasoning for why he did what he did. I don't condone it by the way, I mean, he signed it and now he's obviously paying the consequences
.”

Did you catch that?

and I was not you know because we had Jay's strong opinion piece there wasn't going to be another one from me.

Let me remind you that Andy Katz is ‘an opinion columnist’.

Sounds like we caught someone not telling the whole story or something because obviously by these words he admits he IS an opinionated columnist.

The only other thing the Sports Mob did not address was the ESPN poll asking if Kentucky should be forced to play UMass. I mean, that's a PRETTY STRONG SLANT AGAINST KENTUCKY MR. KATZ. How do you explain that? Is it because the rest of the world likes to think all Kentucky fans are racist rednecks and that Kentucky deserves to be portrayed in this sorta negative way? Is this the truth we don't want to hear Mr. Katz? Anywho. I thought Matt Jones and company would have addressed that poll when talking about the UMass situation. Obviously my opinion of ESPN or Andy Katz hasn't changed for the worse or better, and at the 31:00 mark the Sports Mob gang gives out their take on Andy Katz which is quite true and amusing at the same time. Give it a listen.

If They Were The Same Kid ...

Inspired by Conan O'Brien, I decided to start a feature here at the Wildcat Blog called If They Were The Same Kid. I take head shots of two Kentucky related players, or one Kentucky player and an opponent's player's head shot and see what they would look like if they were the same player and thus saving someone a scholarship (I'm always looking for new inventive ways to help my school save on scholarships you know). If you haven't figured it out yet, this is a cheap ripoff of Conan's If They Mated skit on late night TV. Now on to today's first episode of contestants …

First up, what kind of scholarship would you give away if Derrick Jasper and Mark Coury were the same person?

Let's see you'd might get something like this …

Ok, that what was really lame, too much distortion, but trust me, these get better.

Second, what would you get if you mix the skills of UK breakout star Jodie Meeks and an unproven Michael Porter?

Whoa, too much hair coloring, let's lay off the it's for men hair coloring shall we?

And finally, what would happen if we saved on coaches? Let's say, only for the sake of humoring my mind, that we mix Gillispie's services with Glenn Cyprien's, what kinda dude would we get for a coach?

It might look something like this … I could be wrong but …

Why? Whyy? Why do I decide to do this? Why?

I hope for this feature to be regular event for now on. The Wildcat Blog gets great pleasure out choosing and mixing, and in fact, I promise you I'll only get better at it. That's a promise you can bank on.

Twisting And Turning You're Feeling The Burning ...

(early edition) Saturday Night Video Music Pick, episode 9

This week I decided to do a short version of the SNVMP since I'm sick yet again (sinuses), so tonight I'm picking my two favorite posts of the week per each of my favorite sites. Call it a tribute of sorts because these kids keep the UK blogosphere moving, if even at a slow pace during, well, a slow period for Kentucky and other schools. Anyways, enjoy. I'm taking a nap.

ASoB

My boy Rex Chapman is #3 on ASoB's top shooting guards. Suh-weet, and I agree he should be on the list. Scared to Live Blog because the NCAA might sue you? At least we're not alone. Much thanks for ASoB for catching this story in the beginning because it's certainly a topic that matters to those of us who passionately follow our favorite teams.

Wildcats Thunder

If there's one vid you need to see post NCAA's, it's this one. I applaud Wildcats Thunder UKcatfan33 for the excellent vid put together there. WT's Messenger also puts together a nice opinionated piece on Gillispie's last coaching hire.

Kentucky Sports Radio

I have several links to here today simply 'cause KSR has given us some goodies lately … oh and their usual insider info only available the way they deliver it. So onward my deprived members of Big Blue Nation. The Goodies!

If you ain't got Andy on your show, take your broke broke …
Andy Katz finally gains confidence and talks with the BBN. Hmmm. Hooked on Phonics werks fer me! Oh yeah, KSR makes it to the second round of the hottest sports blogger contest. I don't vote for guys. Whoever made Corey Brewer look this gay in that pic there is a genius. Thanks to that pic, now I can see him being crown drag queen. Here's a 08 list of Scout.com's ranking of list of UK recruits. Thanks! Thanks to Matt Jones, we hear that Tubby Smith told a radio station that he nearly left for the NBA three times while coaching at Kentucky. Are we supposed to be mad or sympathetic? I'm feeling like I don't care after what I've seen now what state Tubby has left UK's recruiting in (I'm still a Tubby fan, but I'd like an explanation from him about his recruiting at Kentucky). Take a look at this girl dunking. The post is titled Why you shouldn't try to dunk over a girl. My thoughts? I'd like to dunk that! (call me a pig already and get it over with, although I ain't complainin' that there's women out there doing a hot blogger's bracket contest either). And finally, 09 UK recruit DeMarcus Cousins has a website. Just don't go contacting him ok? See kids like him who are knowingly going to play college ball somewhere can have a website/Myspace, whatever, but the NCAA should dictate that they shouldn't provide a means for contacting them since stupid fans sometimes like to mess things up for the rest of us. I'd say that's a reasonable request. Remember, most these kids are around 16-18 and still in high school, so the NCAA should say to these potential college athletes who want to have a website/myspace to either make it private or don't provide a means for anyone to contact you through the website. Once in college, they can do whatever they heck they want to do with the site. It's reasonable I tell you!

Well that's it for tonight. KSR really brought the goods this week and I love them for it.

What can over 380 stores in 21 states do for you? If you're Ashley Judd and your store name is Goody's it can get you a Fall line of apparel. That's right, Judd is set to open a line of apparel under product names such as AJ, Ashley Judd, and Love, Ashley. The line of clothing will include denims and cardigans.

Foretelling The Future:

Ashley Judd and Martha Stewart will fight with each other like Rosie bouncing on Donald. The fight spawns a book written by Naomi Judd titled Good Angel vs Bad Angel, and in one part of the story the bad angel turns into a four horned dragon and spews fire dust at the good angel but the good angel takes her halo to redirect the spewing fire dust back at the bad angel. It will be a New York Times Best Seller, and Conan O'Brien would be heard screaming in Times Square holding the book in the air, Whyyyyyyyyy!

It's Gillispie, He's Your Guy, In Lexington, Now I'll Tell You Why!

Look over there

Six out of eleven of you think Gillispie's hot, while the majority really wished I hadn't wasted their time with this poll. Understandable, and I ask for your forgiveness, but since my poll is scientific and is the authority word on all things UK (s-a-r-c-a-s-t-i-c-a-l-l-y), you know, we have to cover all the bases here. So anyways, congrats to Billy G, seems like you won't need any fortune cookies any time soon.

Now for the next poll, which is up now, the Wildcat Blog has decided to let its readers decide this upcoming season's (Football and Hoops) Game Blog Awards, per game and monthly, then for the Year award: given to the top player. Last season I gave out my own awards based on my opinion, but that's no fun yo. I want BBN to help me so after I decide who the nominees are, I want you, my readers, to vote for a winner who will receive my Game Blog.

So will you help me out this upcoming season? I'd really love to see this blog get some help and interaction here. Take the poll. Now. Humor me. Please.

Woo Could Have Successor At UK

Former UK center and UK grad Lukasz Obrzut, the 7-1 center from Gliwice, Poland could very well have his successor at UK after Kentucky offering 6-8 power forward Olek Czyz (Pronounced Chizz and I'll refrain from commenting) from Poland.

This kid was offered a scholarship after the Elite Camp.

So what did this kid do to impress Gillispie and staff? Czyz'z(s) coach says Czyz was playing hoops in gym class when the coach first saw him … “doing windmills and stuff.”

I hope it ain't that easy to impress Gillispie. Let's hope there was something more he saw. He could become the next Polish player after Big Woo to don a UK uni.

So I Guess No More Live-Blogging ...

… from my couch?

Whatever.

VIA ASoB

I know my rights man, and if I wanna write about a freakin' game I see on tv as it's happening (I guess if it's on tape-delay I'm OK), then my freedom of the press allows me to do so on my blog. I'm sure this is more for those bloggers who actually work for the media who make money off of selling papers or whatever, but it still makes you wonder what exactly bloggers like myself are and aren't allowed to use for content (i.e. pictures). How the NCAA can dictate who can and can not write about any game as the game is happening is a little dictatorish if you ask me.

Daddy's A Georgia Man, Son Still Quite Confused

Former L'ville head coach, now the Atlanta Falcons head coach, Bobby, sounds like Pitino, Petrino's son Nick sported a Louisville tee during a practice at Commonwealth Stadium for Friday's Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star game.

He's going to Georgetown College.

Says Nick,

I've really got no ill will for UK. I mean, I used to, but I kind of had to.

Translation: Daddy would disown me and take all my footballs away.

Poor kid, but you don't go wearing a L'ville Tee into Commonwealth when you have no reason being loyal to the Cardinals anymore. I mean, your daddy's a Georgia man now, how's that feel? I'm sure he might be suckered into watching Bulldog games from someone in Atlanta. It's just bound to happen man.

An early edition of tonight's Video Music Pick

Saturday Night Video Music Pick, episode 8

Thirteen beautiful links for you tonight which I deem deliciously favorite from this past week. Enjoy re-reading these posts as most of you probably already have read, or enjoy reading for the first time. They're Saturday Night worthy.

· ASoB posts and email exchange from a Duke alum to Elton Brand. The exchange is quite amusing, especially at Duke's expense.

· Wildcat Fan Report has a post where Andy Katz explains why he doesn't think he's hating on Kentucky. In fact, the guy still can't spell.

· Fire Billy comes out of hibernation with this explosive post: a Chubby 4 Tubby T-shirt at Minnesota, and apparently I was even more out of touch with modern slang as I didn't quite get what chubby meant. Don't worry, I do now. In fact, I had one this morning (TMI).

· This isn't actually a link to a website but something I found on YouTube while searching Kentucky players. It's a vid of Papa John's Stadium getting whipped by mother nature. It's sick, yo.

· Kentucky Sports Radio posts the now famous interview of Billy Gillispie. It's quite the listen and the Wildcat Blog recommends it highly to every fan of college basketball.

· In fact, KSR then posts news of an upcoming Andy Katz interview they'll be conducting next week on their show. I just hope someone asks him about his spelling lately. Please Matt, ask him about his awful spelling or lack of ability to take time and type a sentence correctly.

· ASob posts a nice feature where they count down UK's top players in the modern era at each position. So far, we have the preceding list of Centers, and a previous list of Point Guards, which Wayne Turner makes the top of the list. Rondo and Ed Davender both make the list whom the Wildcat Blog also remembers (specifically Davender).

· ASoB again posts another great post titled Fun with Photoshop: Donovan Edition. Just check out the waffle pick. Now that's funny!

· Non-UK related but worthy enough, Sportz posts a YouTube Vid of a softball chick running into the fence trying to catch a fly ball. Ouch is right!

· Wildcat Thunder's Sktech posts a nicely written piece on whether a Dream Job is a myth or reality in college basketball asking directly wondering if Billy Donovan's job that is same very question: Dream Job: Myth or Reality?

· Via Kentucky Sports Radio, Gregg Doyel, everyone's favorite writer, rips into Billy Donovan. It's all downhill.

· And finally, Kentucky Sports Radio points us to Big Woo's graduation party. I'm hoping Matt Jones gives us a linkage to the clip of the show again like he did last week with Billy Gillispie. I'd love to hear it.

Well that's it for tonight. Have a great Saturday night, yall.

It's Time To Linkage Up My Music Links, Yo!

I thought it might be cool if I linkage up all the music I've linked to all in one post thus far on this blog, but before I link it up for my Big Blue Nation and Wildcat Blog readers, I thought in addition to tomorrow night's Sat. Nite Video Music pick I'd have a special Friday Night edition of the SNVMP.

So without further delay, here is tonight's Video

I Really Want To Go To Camp But ...

UK won't let me.

In what's not a surprising story at all, the NCAA prohibits publicizing visits (or camps) of prospective student athletes, however, even though allowing reporters and fans to witness such an invent wouldn't violate any NCAA rule, if anything printed on paper or posted online about how the athletes faired at the event or just general opinions thereof would, so UK ain't allowin' it man, you know, they're closing the camp to message board posters. LoL.

They never said bloggers though, but I have a feeling they're including us too.

the NCAA expects UK to do everything it can to keep reporters (and, presumably, message-board posters) away from recruits.”
